In 2011, researchers in Japan developed a robotic mouth designed not to simulate speech digitally, but to physically reproduce how humans generate sound. Instead of speakers and software, the device uses an air pump that functions like artificial lungs to push air through a synthetic larynx, where vibrating “vocal cords” create the initial sound. That airflow is then shaped by a silicone tongue, lips, and a controllable nasal cavity, allowing it to mimic the acoustic processes of human speech production. By analyzing the sounds it produced and adjusting its movements, the system could gradually improve its clarity, offering scientists a rare, mechanical model for studying human phonetics, resonance, and articulation in real time.
